A new report by the American Heart Association says coconut oil is as bad for the body as other oils high in saturated fat, like butter, beef fat and palm oil.
Additionally, USA Today reports 82% of the fat in coconut oil is saturated, way above that in butter (63%) and pork lard (39%). "Because coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol, a cause of CVD (cardiovascular disease), and has no known offsetting favorable effects, we advise against the use of coconut oil,” the AHA said in the report.
However, if we have learned anything in life, it is that too much of anything is not good for us. The AHA is correct in saying that Coconut Oil is a saturated fat and saturated fats, as a rule, are not good for you. They contribute to higher cholesterol levels, can lead to cardiovascular disease and even Type 2 Diabetes. In this case, foods high in saturated fats would include cheeses, butter, milk, fatty beef, pork and lamb, to name a few. Clearly you need to avoid these foods or limit them in your diet.
What the AHA doesn’t mention is the positives and all of the amazing ways to use Coconut Oil and it's exciting! Believe it or not, Coconut Oil has a trace of amounts of micronutrients, which include iron, Vitamin K and Vitamin E.
