A 10-year-old boy in Miami died in June with a toxic mix of heroin and fentanyl in his system. And people across the country are asking how this happened.
Can you remember what you were doing when you were 10? I grew up in Miami so like this boy, I was probably hanging out with friends at a pool. I’m betting we were all doing what he was doing—enjoying a summer off from school with our entire lives ahead of us.
Not being a parent, I cannot possibly imagine the depth of grief his own parents feel, but my heart broke when I heard this story. A happy-go-lucky little boy enjoying his summer and now gone too soon. Way too soon.
When things like this happen, I find myself asking what can I do and how can I help. So here is what I have resolved to do. Every week, Sanus will post tips about preventing addiction, how to get help for addiction, support for recovery and preventing relapse.
It may not be much and we may just be adding to the talking heads, but if everyone makes a small step perhaps we can turn the tide.
