Tips for goal setting

How to set goals.

If you follow our blog, you know one way to boost your dopamine is by setting—and reaching—goals you have set for yourself.  That said, goal-setting can be daunting.  Where to start, how to decide what you want to achieve and how to track it.  We’ve got some straightforward tips for you on how to get started.

  1. Follow the S.M.A.R.T method. If you’re not familiar with this, here is what it means.
  • Specific.  Make your goals well defined and focused.
  • Measurable.  Set up a measurement for success.  What will it look like when you’re half way there?  Set up a metrics so you know where you’re at in the process.
  • Attainable.  There is a fine line between setting a goal that is easy to reach and one that is a stretch.  If a goal is too easy to met, you’ll end up without the great feeling of accomplishment.  If it’s too hard and takes too long to attain without seeing progress, you’re more likely to give up.  Thus, it’s important to strike the right balance.
  • Relevant. Set goals that are relevant to the direction you want to go in.
  • Trackable.  Set a deadline (one that is realistic) and make sure you’re checking in on where you’re at with your goal consistently.

2. Put it in writing.  Don’t risk forgetting the grand plan you came up with in your head.  Writing it down makes it real and helps you keep track of the details.

3. Set a goal that motivates you.  If you’re not excited about doing it, you won’t stick with it.

4.  Be consistent.  Every heard of the adage, practice makes perfect?  Goals are not always easy to reach.  That’s why they’re goals.  If being in the best shape of your life was easy, everyone would be a size 0.  But it takes work and discipline and consistency to stick with it!

Here are some categories to consider when goal-setting:

  • Career
  • Financial
  • Enjoyment
  • Weight loss
  • Charity
  • Public service
  • Family
